Auditory Intervention

What is the Listening Program?

The Listening Program (TLP) is a clinically-proven approach that gently trains the auditory system to accurately process sound. It helps to improve the auditory skills needed to effectively listen, learn, and communicate.

When auditory perception is distorted—whether through illness, injury, developmental or other challenges—auditory processing problems can lead to academic, emotional, cognitive and social challenges, including problems with the following:

Attention and concentration

Listening

Speech and language

Memory

Communication

Social skills

Reading

Sensory integration

Self regulation

Physical balance and coordination

Vocal performance and musical ability

Numerous studies worldwide, including research at the University of Sheffield, provide empirical evidence that substantiate The Listening Program’s efficacy. And while that affirms The Listening Program’s credibility, for many the question remains, how does The Listening Program work?

The Listening Program’s psychoacoustically modified music and production techniques are designed to stimulate, or “exercise” the different functions of the auditory processing system. This enables the brain to better receive, process, store and utilize the valuable information provided through the varied soundscapes in our lives such as music, language and the environment in which we live.

Advanced Brain Technologies, LLC (ABT) developed the Listening Program products by building on the work of Dr. Alfred Tomatis, M.D., a pioneer in the field of auditory interventions. The ABT interdisciplinary team is comprised of experienced professionals in the therapeutic, health, neurodevelopment, education, music and sound engineering fields.

Who can benefit from the Listening Program?
Anyone can benefit from improved listening function, auditory processing, and communication skills, and from relief from "toxic noise." However, at Island Therapies, we see particular benefits for children with autistic spectrum disorders, auditory processing disorders, sensory integration dysfunction, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, and auditory defensive behaviors or any other combination of language, social, communication, memory, and reading disorders.

How does the program work?
The Listening Program is a home based system that parents or individuals can use independently under the guidance of a trained TLP provider. It is a home based program that follows a scheduled listening of one or two fifteen-minute sessions a day for 5 out of 7 days, over a course of approximately 20 or more weeks. Specialized headphones are needed in addition to the prepared programs. As your provider at Island Therapies we will help you gain the needed materials and train you in the usage and schedules specific to the individual. We will also supervise your program and answer questions and modify the program as you proceed.
