An occupational therapy treatment intensive is available at Island Therapies to provide state of the art interventions for children and their families. A treatment intensive is an opportunity for a child to work with an occupational therapist in a concentrated manner over a short period of time to maximize the therapeutic benefit. It is designed to provide a consistent sensory integration therapeutic environment over a period of one week. Parents are then provided with a home program, based on the interventions deemed most appropriate for their child. This home program is designed to capitalize on the “window of opportunity” created in their child’s sensory system by the treatment intensive. This program is also a viable method for children who cannot be seen for OT over an extended time period due to other constraints. Intensives will be conducted by Margaret Spring and Jeanne Ganz, two OT’s certified in sensory integration and board certified in pediatrics with over 30 years of experience in pediatric OT and sensory integration. Treatment intensives are provided for 5 consecutive days, for 2 hours per day. The two hours are divided into two, one hour slots with a break of approximately 2 hours between them. This is specifically tailored to monitor progress and provide the most effective intervention. Treatment intensives are tailored to the individual child and provide sensory integrative treatment that willinclude a combination of several strategies specifically designed for your child’s needs. These may include the use suspended equipment for maximizing vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile integration, auditory integration using listening programs, postural-ocular work, training and teaching in self regulatory techniques, Wilbarger Deep Touch Pressure Program (brushing), implementation of the “sensory diet”, and parent training. Families are welcome to include their own therapists or treatment teams in this process but must provide advanced notice to allow for appropriate time and space planning. Copies of all prior evaluations and reports, if provided, will be read and integrated as appropriate to the child and treatment plan. Additional consult to treatment team (outside of treatment intensive) can be provided. All intensives will begin with an evaluation on the first day and a written report will be provided. Parents will be asked to complete questionnaires and provide doctor’s prescription for occupational therapy in advance of treatment intensive. |
