Tutoring

Tutoring can be beneficial to early intervention for preschool children as well as an academic support for school age children. Working one-to-one with a tutor can help children maintain and strengthen skills. Tutoring can have a place in preventing the regression of learned skills during breaks. Children receiving tutoring are accountable to the tutor for doing their best. The interaction of tutor and student helps students who have attention difficulties focus and stay on task. Students with or without disabilities can benefit from having a tutor.

Sometimes children who struggle in school need to build confidence in the possibility of their successes. As a tutor works with a child, direct affirmation can be given as accomplishments and efforts are acknowledged and observed. Strengths and growth can be celebrated with immediate praise. A tutor working with an individual child can target and address specific needs as he/she learns more about the child he/she is serving. Studies show that children in Reading Recovery, a remediation service where first grade children read orally with a trained adult or teacher individually, on a scheduled, regular basis, improved significantly. "The oral reading task has been determined to yield the highest text reading level with accuracy of 90%." (

Common areas of weakness are: organization, test taking, note taking, attention, reading, writing, and phonics, and counting money. Strategies can be focused on during tutoring sessions to create plans that students can implement and learn to create themselves. These can help a student throughout their lifetime.

Tutoring can be a strong bridge between student and school. A tutoring session can be the positive environment that reinforces possibility for success. The tutor may employ a slightly different method or modality to help the student discover what needs to be learned. Often teachers and tutors communicate to determine goals and provide their students with the best treatment of support through assignments given.

Sessions generally run for approximately one hour. Sessions can be short term or for longer periods as needed.
